![]() The books are told in dual point of view, but the first character I came up with was Vane. Q: Please describe your trilogy “Sky Fall,” and how the word “windwalker” started it all.Ī: The “Sky Fall” books are about air elementals called sylphs, and it’s set in the Coachella Valley, so there are lots of dust storms and wind battles - with a forbidden love story woven in. While it’s probably the number one question I get asked, I’ll confess that I always find it strange to have readers asking me if I’m Team Keefe, Team Fitz, or Team Dex, since I’m solidly Team Sophie - meaning, I’m not going to pre-plan any crush-related plot developments I’m going to let the story unfold naturally and see where Sophie leads me. Since then, I’ve let my readers vote online every year to choose Iggy’s new “look” for the next book in the series. I decided that was a brilliant idea and let her pick the color. Q: What have been the two most unusual questions your fans have asked you, and how did you answer them?Ī: I’m not sure if this counts as “unusual,” but years ago I had a reader ask me if I was going to change Iggy’s color in the third book, since I’d changed it in the second book - Iggy being Sophie’s pet imp. In the meantime, I promise I’ll write it as fast as I possibly can! I’ll be diving in as soon as I’m home from (the book) tour in December, and then hopefully I’ll have some answers for my readers. And at this point, I’m not actually sure when book nine will be published, or if it will be the last in the series, because I haven’t been able to start writing it yet. I never planned to write such lengthy books, but there are so many plot threads - and so many characters - that it always turns out that way. It may seem like it’s shorter, but only because my publisher’s design team adjusted some of the formatting because they were worried that if the spine got much thicker, pages might fall out. In fact, don’t be fooled by the ‘Legacy’ page count. Q: Does each book in this series get longer? When will book nine be published, and will that be the last in the series?Ī: They do get longer. Once again, I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t read it, so I’ll just say that she can do some incredible things, but she also definitely needs the help of her powerful friends, who each have unique abilities of their own. But as the series goes on, she discovers other abilities. Sophie is caught in the middle of all of that, and when we meet her in book one, she’s a telepath - meaning she can read minds. But there are cracks in the system, and those injustices have triggered both good and bad rebellions. And the people can do things that seem like magic - though for them it’s simply part of their nature. Everything is beautiful and powerful and screams of wealth and prestige. What powers does the main protagonist have?Ī: I’ve always called the Lost Cities my “crumbling Utopia” because on the surface it looks very idyllic. Q: Please describe the Lost Cities for those who are new to this world. So the more truths Sophie unearths, the more she risks upsetting that delicate balance and then has to decide whether or not to share what she learns or hide it for the same reasons. Even the “good guys” hide certain details, either to protect people or to avoid causing mass panic. Q: Why can truth be a dangerous discovery, and what new responsibilities does Sophie encounter?Ī: Sophie lives in a world with a lot of secrets. ![]() And that’s of course one of the challenges she faces in “Legacy.” But on a broader scale, she’s also struggling to keep focused on the huge issues affecting her world while dealing with personal worries that keep distracting her. ![]() A: Well, I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t read the series, so I’ll just say that Sophie discovers something about herself at the end of “Flashback” that will make her life very complicated - and possibly ruin something important to her - if she doesn’t find a way to clear it up.
